Mumbai Man Ends Life Over Harassment by Moneylenders: Three Accused Booked

Mumbai, Maharashtra: In a tragic incident, a 57-year-old Mumbai resident, Shahu Sadashiv Mane, allegedly died by suicide after enduring relentless harassment from private moneylenders over a loan of ₹3.5 lakh. Mane, who once ran an excise-related business, jumped in front of a local train at GTB Nagar railway station on Sunday morning.
Police revealed Mane had been under severe stress after a failed business during the COVID-19 lockdown compelled him to take the high-interest loan at a staggering 9% monthly rate. As repayment delays grew, the lenders—Manisha Dethe, her husband Sudhir Dethe, and another woman—allegedly abused and threatened Mane, even in front of his family.
On the day of the tragedy, Manisha Dethe reportedly visited Mane's house, refusing to leave until repayment was made. Overwhelmed by the threats and fearing for his life, Mane ended it by jumping in front of a train. A suicide note found in his pocket pointed to the harassment he faced.
The Government Railway Police has filed an FIR against the accused under charges of abetment to suicide, while Mane’s family mourns a loss that highlights the devastating impact of financial stress and coercion.
