NGT Pulls Up Noida Authority Over Discharging Treated Sewage Water

New Delhi, February 17, 2025: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed concern over the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority's (Noida) failure to utilise treated sewage water for productive purposes, directing the authority to submit a comprehensive plan and timeline to achieve 100% utilisation of treated water.
The NGT's actions come after the authority was accused of discharging a significant amount of treated sewage water into drains instead of reusing it for irrigation and other productive activities. The tribunal took suo motu cognisance of the issue following a report published in Hindustan Times on June 11, 2024, which highlighted the wastage of treated water.
During a hearing on February 6, 2025, NGT emphasised the importance of conserving natural resources and held Noida accountable for the excessive discharge of treated water. Currently, only 20% of the treated sewage water is being utilised, leaving a staggering 74% to be wasted. The NGT bench, led by Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr. A. Senthil Vel, remarked that the progress on infrastructure projects aimed at increasing water reuse remains slow.
In its response, Noida authority informed the tribunal that it generates 260 MLD (million litres per day) of treated water but manages to reuse only 68 MLD. The remaining 192 MLD is being discharged into drains. While the authority has proposed several projects, including the laying of pipelines to enhance the reuse of treated water, NGT officials were dissatisfied with the lack of clarity on progress.
The tribunal noted that significant projects, such as the connection of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to nearby sectors, are still incomplete. Despite plans to increase the reuse of water by 18-22 MLD with upcoming infrastructure, the NGT found Noida’s progress lacking and directed the authority to submit a detailed plan for the complete utilisation of treated water within four weeks.
The NGT stated, "STP-treated water has its own value and can be used in various projects, thereby saving natural water resources. Hence, Noida must ensure 100% utilisation of STP-treated water." The case will be heard again by the NGT on May 15, 2025, to review the progress.
This ruling underscores the growing concerns over water management and the need for authorities to prioritise sustainable practices to address the city’s increasing water demand and environmental preservation.
