Rabies Tragedy in Kalyan: Man's Death Highlights Urgent Need for Vigilance and Vaccination

Kalyan, Maharashtra, India: A tragic rabies death in Kalyan emphasizes the crucial need for immediate medical attention following animal bites. A 27-year-old man, Shubham Chaudhary, succumbed to rabies after being bitten by a stray dog and a cat. His death underscores the urgency of public awareness and prompt action.


Two months after being bitten by a stray dog and later by a cat, Shubham did not seek medical care or receive the anti-rabies vaccine. He experienced symptoms like headaches and body aches, and despite hospitalization, his condition worsened, leading to his death at Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai.

Between January and October 2024, Kalyan-Dombivli reported 18,705 dog bite cases. The health department sterilized and vaccinated 12,406 stray dogs, but the number of incidents remains high.

Rashmi Shukla, chief officer of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s Health Department, emphasized the need for immediate rabies vaccination following animal bites to prevent fatalities.

A woman in Titwala was injured in a stray dog attack, and an eight-year-old boy in Kalyan was bitten by a stray dog.
