Rakesh Roshan Reveals Why Ajay Devgn Was Initially Chosen Over Salman Khan for Karan Arjun

In a fascinating revelation, director Rakesh Roshan has shared new insights into the casting of his iconic 1995 film Karan Arjun. The film, which became one of Bollywood’s most beloved action-packed family dramas, originally featured Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the lead roles. However, Roshan has now disclosed that at various points during the casting process, both Ajay Devgn and Aamir Khan were also considered for the film.

In addition to Devgn, Karan Arjun also saw the name of Aamir Khan being floated for the role of Arjun. “Aamir was also in consideration,” Rakesh Roshan confessed. “He had a great screen presence, and we thought he could bring a lot to the role. But for various reasons, that too did not materialize.” At the time, Aamir Khan was busy with other commitments, and the casting decision ultimately leaned toward Salman Khan, who was at the peak of his career.

Though Devgn and Khan were initially in talks, the casting decision shifted to the dynamic duo of Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, who went on to create unforgettable chemistry as the reincarnated brothers, Karan and Arjun. The film became a massive hit, not only because of its gripping storyline but also due to the on-screen camaraderie between the two stars.

Karan Arjun went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of 1995, solidifying Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s place as Bollywood’s leading stars. The film’s success also created an enduring bond between the two actors, who have since collaborated on multiple projects, though Karan Arjun remains one of their most iconic films.

Even today, Karan Arjun is remembered for its memorable dialogue, action sequences, and emotional depth. Rakesh Roshan’s direction, combined with the star power of Shah Rukh and Salman, made the film a milestone in Bollywood’s history. The director also credits the film’s success to the immense popularity of its leading stars and their brilliant performances. In hindsight, it’s clear that Karan Arjun’s casting decisions were crucial to its success, and Rakesh Roshan’s timely shift in choices helped create one of the most iconic films in Bollywood history.
