RG Kar Rape and Murder Case: Former Principal and Police Officer Granted Bail as CBI Misses Deadline

SEALDAH, KOLKATA:  A sessions court in Sealdah granted bail on Friday to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run hospital. The bail was granted after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet against the accused within the mandatory 90-day period.

The incident occurred on the morning of August 9, when the body of the junior doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital. The CBI took over the investigation on the orders of the Calcutta High Court and arrested Ghosh and Mondal on September 14 for alleged evidence tampering and delay in filing the FIR. The CBI had already submitted a chargesheet against the prime accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer.

During the court hearing, the defense counsel argued that the failure of the CBI to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days warranted the release of their clients. The court granted bail to the accused on furnishing surety bonds of Rs 2,000 each and directed them to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

While Mondal is expected to be released soon, Ghosh remains in custody due to judicial remand in another financial irregularities case at the hospital.
