SC pulls UP Govt for bulldozer action without notice, awards ₹25 lakh compensation

New Delhi : The Supreme Court reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government on the matter of demolition of residential houses with bulldozers for the road widening project and said that "you cannot ask people to vacate the house and demolish them just by beating drums. Proper notice should have been given for this."
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed the Government to give interim compensation of ₹25 lakh for the house demolished in Azamgarh.
The Supreme Court ordered disciplinary action against the officers responsible for illegally demolishing residential houses. During the hearing, the court said, "We are not legalising encroachment but how can you start demolishing people's houses like this. This is anarchy."
The Chief Justice said that this is completely arbitrary. "You tell where the proper procedure was followed. We have an affidavit, which states that no notice was issued. In fact, a house was demolished in Azamgarh, UP despite the ban of Allahabad High Court."
