Sister’s Jealousy Turns Deadly: Woman Stabs Mother to Death in Kurla Over Sibling Rivalry

Kurla, Mumbai:  In a shocking incident, a 41-year-old woman from Kurla allegedly stabbed her 62-year-old mother to death over sibling rivalry. The crime occurred on January 2 at the family’s residence in Qureshi Nagar, when Reshma Qazi, feeling angry at her mother’s preference for her elder sister, attacked her with a knife. After the brutal act, Qazi surrendered at the Chunabhatti police station, where she confessed to the crime.

According to the police, Qazi's mother, Shabira Banu Shaikh, was found dead by her 42-year-old elder daughter, Jainbabi Qureshi. “I was shocked to find my mother lying in a pool of blood after receiving a call from my brother that Reshma had confessed to the murder," said Qureshi. Despite rushed attempts to take Shaikh to Sion Hospital, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.

The elder daughter revealed in her statement that Qazi had been struggling with jealousy, often accusing their mother of favoring her over the younger daughter. This tension had escalated in the past, with Qazi even filing a police complaint against her elder sister in 2021. The accused, who had a history of anger towards her mother for these perceived inequalities, was said to have confessed she was provoked by her mother’s admiration for her elder sister.

The police are now investigating the primary motive behind the crime while charging Reshma Qazi with murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant sections.
