Malad: Police Under Assault Twice in a Week as Violent Attacks Rise

Malad, Mumbai: In a disturbing series of events, police officers in Malad have faced two violent assaults within a single week. The latest attack unfolded on New Year's Eve during a nakabandi (checkpoint) operation. A couple reportedly engaged in hostile behavior, snatching a male officer's nameplate, verbally abusing him, and viciously biting a female officer. As constables Jagtap and Bhangle arrived to assist, the woman allegedly pushed, bit, and kicked the officers. The couple was eventually arrested and charged with obstructing officers from performing their duties.

Earlier, on December 24, Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Manik Sawant was struck on the head with a bamboo stick while trying to control traffic congestion at Kanchpada Junction. After briefly losing consciousness, Sawant was rushed to the hospital but later discharged. The attacker, Arun Harijan, was apprehended by onlookers and arrested by police.

This alarming pattern of assaults on law enforcement follows an earlier warning issued in 2012 by then-Police Commissioner Dr. Satyapal Singh, highlighting severe consequences for those who attack officers. These measures include losing passports and driving licenses, employment difficulties, and restrictions on leaving the country.

The authorities remain determined to crack down on attacks on police officers, reaffirming the urgency of reinforcing these strict enforcement rules.
