Thane Begins Pod Taxi Trials to Ease Traffic and Improve Connectivity

Thane, India: The city has launched pod taxi trials in the Ghodbunder area to combat traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between metro lines. This elevated transit system, similar to a ropeway, is designed to navigate the city's crowded roads, especially during the monsoon season.

The pilot project, introduced to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik at the Arvind Pendse Auditorium, will operate on a 1.8-kilometer stretch between Bhayander Pada and Vihang Hill, with taxis running at 60-70 km/hr and carrying up to 16 passengers per ride. If successful, the system will expand to the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation.

Sarnaik emphasized that the project requires no financial support from the municipal corporation or state government. Additionally, authorities plan to conduct a survey of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to explore future pod taxi and ropeway locations. The system will run on electric power, with cement girders and steel tracks ensuring durability.

If the trials prove effective, pod taxis could revolutionize urban transit in Thane, reducing congestion and improving travel times across the city.
