Thane Hospital Successfully Treats 26-Year-Old Woman Weighing 232.5 kg, Paving the Way for Healthier Life
In a remarkable medical achievement, a Mumbai hospital has successfully treated a 26-year-old foreign national suffering from super obesity, highlighting its expertise in bariatric and metabolic care.

Mumbai : A 26-year-old woman with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 86.44—more than three times the normal range—was battling life-threatening health complications due to her extreme weight of 232.5 kg. Her condition had led to several serious health issues, including severe back pain, obstructive sleep apnea, irregular menstrual cycles, and breathlessness with even minimal physical activity. Despite repeated attempts at weight loss, her condition progressively worsened, increasing her risk of developing diabetes and other metabolic diseases.
Describing the case as extraordinary, Dr. Prashant Salvi, Chief Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, said, "This was an extremely complex case. With a BMI of 86.44, the patient was categorized as super obese, making her susceptible to severe health risks. Bariatric surgery was the only viable solution to restore her health and improve her quality of life."
The patient underwent a gastric bypass procedure, a minimally invasive surgery performed by Dr. Salvi and his expert team at Jupiter Hospital’s Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Unit. The surgery was aimed at achieving sustainable weight loss and addressing the life-threatening health risks associated with her obesity.
"Given her weight of 232.5 kg, lifestyle changes alone would not have been enough. After a thorough evaluation, we determined that surgical intervention was necessary for effective and lasting weight management," Dr. Salvi explained.
The success of the surgery was evident just hours after the procedure. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk comfortably only five hours post-surgery and was discharged from the hospital on the third postoperative day. During her follow-up visit 10 days later, she had already lost an impressive 16 kg, marking the start of her journey toward a healthier lifestyle.
Jupiter Hospital’s Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Unit is renowned for its advanced techniques in managing obesity and its related complications. This case emphasizes the importance of early intervention and a multidisciplinary approach to treating super obesity, ultimately leading to better outcomes and an improved quality of life for patients.
This achievement stands as a testament to the hospital's commitment to providing cutting-edge healthcare and underscores the significance of timely surgical intervention in cases of severe obesity.
