Tragedy in Wadala: Homeless Families Struggle After Two Children Killed in Road Accidents

Wadala, Mumbai: The growing issue of homelessness in Wadala has come under scrutiny after two tragic road accidents claimed the lives of two children in the past three months. The victims, a four-year-old boy and a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler, were crushed to death by motorists while sleeping on footpaths.
On Sunday, little Vardan Londhe was killed when a car ran over him while he was sleeping beside his mother, Priya, who sustained severe injuries. His father, Nikhil Londhe, expressed frustration over the lack of housing options after their slum was demolished by the BMC, forcing them onto the streets.
Many homeless residents in Wadala voiced their distress, stating they have no choice but to live on footpaths due to unaffordable housing. “I earn barely ₹300-500 a day. Even renting a hut is impossible. Where else can we go?” said Ravi Daund, a struggling daily wage earner.
Locals, however, have raised concerns over safety and crime. Some shop owners claim the area has become unsafe due to open defecation, substance abuse, and violent altercations among the homeless. “We have schools and colleges here. What if something happens to young girls passing by?” questioned a worried resident.
Another similar accident occurred on December 21, 2024, when four-year-old Ayush Kinawade was crushed under an SUV near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College. The driver, Bhushan Ghole, was arrested, but Ayush’s family reportedly left Mumbai after the incident.
While authorities continue demolishing illegal settlements, residents stress that a permanent housing solution is needed to break the cycle of homelessness and tragedies.
