Trump's Tough Stance: New Sanctions on Colombia Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Washington: In a move that escalates tensions between the U.S. and Colombia, President Donald Trump announced stringent sanctions against the South American country on Sunday. The new measures come in response to Colombia's refusal to accept U.S. deportation flights carrying Colombian migrants.

In retaliation, Trump imposed heavy tariffs on imports from Colombia and announced visa restrictions for Colombian officials, allies, and supporters. He also stated that the U.S. would increase security checks on all Colombian cargo and citizens entering the country. "These measures are just the beginning," Trump declared in a post on Truth Social, emphasizing the U.S. will not tolerate Colombia's failure to honor its legal obligations regarding migrant deportations.

The crisis started when Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the Trump administration of treating Colombian migrants like criminals, referencing disturbing images of handcuffed detainees. In response, Petro has promised to facilitate the "respectful return" of Colombian migrants by providing flights back to their homeland and ordering a 25% tariff increase on U.S. goods as a retaliatory measure.

With the situation at a standstill, both leaders remain resolute in their positions, suggesting a prolonged diplomatic standoff that could have broader economic implications.
