Voice Against Drugs Silenced: Punjab Sarpanch Murdered by Pro-Drug Group

Chhana Gulab Singh Wala, Barnala District, Punjab: In a tragic incident in Punjab's Barnala district, Sukhjit Singh, the 26-year-old newly elected sarpanch of Chhana Gulab Singh Wala village, was murdered on Sunday night. A group of villagers allegedly linked to drug peddlers attacked Singh with sharp weapons, resulting in his death.

Singh, supported by the AAP, had long opposed the drug trade in his village. His father, Amarjit Singh, confirmed his son’s vocal opposition to drug peddlers. The murder raises serious concerns about the safety of public officials challenging drug abuse. Barnala Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Singh Mand, assured that efforts are underway to arrest the accused.

India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, aims to curb drug abuse and trafficking, with severe penalties for those involved. The Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) also targets organized crime syndicates, including drug trafficking operations.

Sukhjit Singh’s murder highlights the dangers faced by those opposing drug abuse in Punjab. It emphasizes the need for better protection for public officials and stronger enforcement of laws to combat drug trafficking. Community collaboration and effective law enforcement are crucial to tackling drug-related violence.
