22 Govt officials injured, 2 dead in anti-encroachment drive in Assam

Guwahati : Regarding the incident of attack on government officials posted on duty in Sonapur of Kamrup (Metro) district, Director General of Police GP Singh instructed his force to take necessary action against all those involved in the incident.
Singh shared a post on social media and revealed the whole situation. He informed that the revenue officers of Kamrup (Metro) district, following the prescribed procedures, have been carrying out eviction proceedings from government land in the notified tribal belt of Sonapur Revenue Circle of the district since September 9.
During this process, 248 bigha government land has been freed from encroachment by removing 237 illegally constructed structures by unauthorized people in the tribal area.
The DGP said that on September 12, government officials including on-duty police were attacked with sharp weapons and stones were thrown at them, obstructing them in the discharge of government duty and causing serious injuries with lethal intent.
In this, 22 government officials (as per records available so far) have been injured, including serious injuries. Government vehicles were also damaged.
He has informed that in view of such targeted attacks by miscreants, the police also resorted to the use of limited force following due procedure. Due to which 13 people were injured, out of which two have been declared dead in the hospital.
The DGP has said that the Guwahati Police have been directed to identify all the miscreants involved in the attack on government officials and take legal action. The conspiracy behind the attack on government officials on the fourth day of the eviction on September 12 will also be investigated and all those involved in it will be punished, including instigators and conspirators. Proper statutory procedures are being followed regarding the use of force by the police. Proper treatment is being provided to the government officials and the injured.
