Allegations of Selective Traffic Enforcement Emerge on Andheri-Kurla Road

Mumbai | 22 June 2025: The Watchdog Foundation, a civic rights group, has raised concerns over alleged unequal enforcement of traffic regulations on Andheri-Kurla Road near Chakala’s Holy Family Church. The complaint, dated 21 June 2025, highlights an incident involving a private car and a police vehicle both attempting to enter the one-way stretch of the road from the wrong direction — but facing different outcomes.
According to eyewitness accounts shared by the Foundation, traffic police on site immediately intervened when a private car tried to drive into the one-way road against the permitted flow. The vehicle was stopped, presumably in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act and relevant local rules.
However, shortly thereafter, the same observer reportedly witnessed a government police vehicle entering the same road in the wrong direction without any interference from traffic personnel.
"This inconsistency points to a disturbing double standard, where government vehicles appear to be exempted from traffic norms that apply to the general public," stated the Watchdog Foundation in a formal communication. "Such selective enforcement undermines both the principle of equality before the law and public trust in traffic management."
The group has called upon the Mumbai Traffic Police to issue a clarification: Are government vehicles legally permitted to violate one-way restrictions? If no such exemption exists, the Foundation demands that traffic rules be enforced uniformly, regardless of the vehicle’s ownership or department.
The incident has sparked debate among local commuters, many of whom echoed the concern on social media, calling for accountability and transparency in traffic rule enforcement.
Officials from the Mumbai Traffic Division have yet to comment on the matter.
