Avalanche Claims Lives of Mother and Son: Tragedy Ruled an Accident

A British mother and her son were killed in what has been described as a "tragic accident" during an avalanche in France last December. Kate Vokes, 54, and Archie Vokes, 22, both experienced skiers from Manchester, were struck while skiing in an off-piste area near the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains resort in the French Alps. The coroner overseeing the inquest, Alison Much, confirmed the deaths were accidental and noted that neither French nor British authorities found grounds for prosecution or further legal action.

The avalanche occurred in an area known for its challenging terrain, away from the marked ski runs. During the inquest at Stockport Coroners Court, it was revealed that Kate and Archie were enjoying their holiday in France when the tragedy occurred. Despite being experienced skiers, the pair were unable to avoid the sudden and overwhelming force of the avalanche. Coroner Much acknowledged the pair's skiing expertise and the inherent risks associated with off-piste skiing. She extended her condolences to the family, highlighting the devastating loss of two lives in such unexpected circumstances. Local authorities said at the time that the avalanche began at an altitude of about 2,300 metres (7,546 ft) and travelled around 400 metres (1,312 ft). Officials said it might have been triggered by another party of skiers at a higher altitude. No action will be taken by the French authorities, as the deaths were determined to result from natural causes, with no evidence of negligence or foul play. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable and potentially deadly conditions in high-altitude environments, even for seasoned adventurers
