Bangladesh Confirms 88 Attacks on Minorities Amid Ongoing Communal Violence

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Bangladesh has confirmed a total of 88 incidents of communal violence targeting minorities, particularly Hindus, following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August. Interim government spokesperson Shafiqul Alam reported that 70 individuals have been arrested in connection with the attacks, which primarily took place between August 5 and October 22. Alam also indicated that more incidents are still being reported from areas like Sunamganj and Gazipur.

The confirmation came a day after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri raised concerns about the safety of minorities during meetings with Bangladeshi leadership. Misri’s visit to Dhaka was part of the annual foreign office consultations, marking the first senior Indian official visit since the change in government.

Alam stated that while some of the violence targeted individuals with political affiliations or personal disputes, the government assured that the police are taking appropriate actions to address the issue. Additionally, further details on incidents post-October 22 are expected to be disclosed soon.

The rising violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples, has drawn widespread concern, particularly from India, which has expressed its distress over the situation.
