BJP Announces Construction of Ram Temple in Murshidabad Amid Controversy Over TMC MLA's Mosque Proposal

Berhampore, West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced plans to begin construction of a Ram temple in Berhampore, Murshidabad, in January 2025, coinciding with the inauguration anniversary of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The temple, estimated to cost ₹10 crore, will be built on land already identified by the party.
This announcement comes after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, Humayun Kabir, proposed constructing a mosque in the area resembling the Babri Masjid. Kabir claimed that the mosque would honor the sentiments of the region’s significant minority community and was a tribute to the Babri Masjid demolished in 1992.
The TMC distanced itself from Kabir’s comments, calling them a personal matter. Senior party leaders clarified that Kabir’s proposal does not represent the official stance of the TMC, while Kabir defended his remarks as expressing emotional pain rather than a political agenda.
Opposition leaders criticized Kabir’s proposal, with BJP leaders accusing the TMC of engaging in appeasement politics and fueling division. The TMC, meanwhile, reiterated that anyone is free to build places of worship on their land.
