BJP Leader Annamalai Whips Himself in Protest Against Anna University Sexual Assault

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu : In a dramatic protest against the sexual assault of a student at Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai on Friday whipped himself six times in front of his house in Coimbatore, pledging to go barefoot for the next 48 days. The intense gesture aimed at ousting the ruling DMK government was accompanied by a firm commitment to continue the BJP's agitation, which, according to Annamalai, highlights the state's deteriorating education standards, economic decline, and police apathy toward women’s safety.
Standing before a crowd of party supporters and journalists, Annamalai explained his act of self-flagellation as a personal punishment for the "sins" of the government, consciously or unconsciously. Reflecting on his past as a police officer, he shared the harrowing experience of investigating a 10-year-old girl’s rape case, emphasizing the importance of swift and effective police action.
As part of his ongoing protest, Annamalai has vowed not to wear footwear for 48 days, seeking to apply pressure on the government. He criticized the handling of the sexual assault case, including concerns over the premature release of the FIR that could silence other victims.
This gesture comes amidst increasing calls for justice for the victim, with the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister pledging improved campus security. Annamalai also clarified that the BJP's protests had been postponed as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
