BJP-Led NDA MLAs Demand ‘Mass Operation’ Against Kuki Militants in Manipur

Amid escalating tensions in Manipur, 27 MLAs from the BJP-led NDA have passed a resolution demanding a “mass operation” against Kuki militants following the recent tragic killings in Jiribam district. The attack claimed the lives of six individuals, including three women and three children, sparking widespread outrage in the violence-hit state.

In their resolution, the legislators called for the Kuki militants to be declared an “unlawful organisation” within seven days and urged the Centre to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The MLAs also demanded a review of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the region as per a directive issued on November 14.

The lawmakers have threatened to consult with the people of Manipur to determine further action if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe. They also condemned recent attacks on properties of ministers and MLAs, pledging legal action based on the findings of a high-powered committee.

Despite these strong demands, the meeting highlighted internal rifts within the state’s leadership. Only 26 MLAs attended the meeting convened by Chief Minister Biren Singh, with seven absent on medical grounds and 11 failing to provide reasons.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the BJP-led government, accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of failing to address the prolonged crisis in Manipur. “How long will the excruciating agony of the people of Manipur continue like this?” he questioned in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The state and central governments have assured that all necessary steps will be taken to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. However, the situation remains precarious, with mounting political and social unrest.
