BMC Delays Auction of Key Malabar Hill, Crawford Market, and Worli Plots Amid Environmental Concerns

Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has postponed the auction of three prime plots in Malabar Hill, near Crawford Market, and Worli by 12 days, following concerns raised by potential bidders. These plots are being auctioned on a 30-year lease with an option for a 30-year renewal, aiming to generate revenue for the BMC’s infrastructural projects.
Notable companies, including L&T, Welspun World, and Runwal Developers, attended a pre-bid meeting last month, during which concerns regarding the plots' status were raised. Questions were raised about the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ-2) classification and whether the Malabar Hill plot, once designated for a public garden, was part of a Recreational Ground (RG) and Green Slope. Environmental activists, including Zoru Bhathena, have also voiced opposition, citing potential environmental impacts.
Local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha has called for a halt to the auction process, particularly for the Malabar Hill plot. Despite these concerns, the BMC has extended the tender submission deadline to December 16, moving forward with the auction plans.
