BMC Halts Construction Work in Byculla & Borivali to Tackle Mumbai's Rising Air Pollution

Mumbai, Byculla, Borivali East: In a bold move to combat the worsening air quality in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to halt all construction activities in Byculla and Borivali East areas, which have been recording an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of around 200. This decision will be enforced within the next 24 hours, and construction will only resume once sites implement the BMC’s stringent 28-point dust mitigation measures.
This ban affects both public infrastructure projects and private construction sites across these areas. The BMC is monitoring the situation closely and may expand the restriction to Worli and Navy Nagar if AQI levels do not improve in the coming days.
A total of 286 construction sites across the city have already received stop-work notices from the BMC. If these sites fail to adhere to the regulations, the civic body will file FIRs, which are non-bailable, under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.
As a part of the ongoing air quality improvement measures, the BMC is also working on reducing dust pollution through actions such as spraying water on construction sites and conducting regular cleanups on roads. The Civic Commissioner also emphasized that although the city's air quality has improved over the past few years, construction dust and vehicle emissions remain major contributors to pollution.
Further monitoring will be done to assess the situation, and the BMC continues its efforts to ensure cleaner air for Mumbai’s residents.
