Chhattisgarh Journalist Found Dead After Investigating Road Project Corruption: What Led to Mukesh Chandrakar’s Tragic End

Bijapur,Chhattisgarh: Chhattisgarh-based journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, known for his fearless investigations, was found dead inside a water tank on January 3 in Bijapur district. The 39-year-old journalist had been missing since the night of January 1, following a meeting arranged by contractor Suresh Chandrakar's brother. His body was discovered on Suresh’s property, where he was last seen.
Mukesh was investigating a ₹120-crore road construction project in Bastar that allegedly involved corruption and misuse of power. His exposé prompted a government inquiry, shining a light on malpractice within the region's contractor lobby, known for silencing critics through intimidation and threats. Mukesh’s investigation made him a target, with reports suggesting harassment and even violence against journalists pursuing similar stories in the area.
The family’s search for Mukesh began when his phone was turned off after the meeting with Ritesh Chandrakar, prompting his brother, Yukesh Chandrakar, to file a missing person report. CCTV footage tracked his final movements before his body was found.
A former journalist with more than a decade of experience, Mukesh was also celebrated for his role in securing the release of CRPF commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, who had been kidnapped by Maoists in 2021. His investigative reporting on Naxal attacks and tribal issues on his YouTube channel, Bastar Junction, brought him regional recognition.
Mukesh’s tragic death has led to calls for justice and highlighted the perilous situation faced by journalists working in conflict zones. His passing has sparked outrage among fellow journalists in Bastar, who are demanding accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Bijapur police have assured a comprehensive investigation, with authorities questioning several people connected to the contractor’s activities.
