Mumbai’s Notorious Chain Snatcher Jaffar Irani Shot Dead by Chennai Police

Chennai/Mumbai: Jaffar Gulam Hussain Irani, a wanted criminal with over 150 cases of chain-snatching and other crimes, was shot dead by Chennai police in an encounter near Taramani Railway Station early Thursday morning.

Jaffar, 35, led a gang from Irani Basti in Thane that operated across multiple states. He, along with his accomplices Misamum Dhusvasam Mesam Irani and Salman Hussain Irani, arrived in Chennai on Wednesday and targeted the city's IT corridor, committing at least eight chain-snatching incidents within an hour.

Following a police chase, Jaffar was arrested at Chennai airport just before boarding a flight to Mumbai, while Misamum was removed from a Hyderabad-bound flight. Salman was later arrested in Andhra Pradesh.

During a late-night recovery operation, Jaffar attempted to attack the police with a hidden firearm at Taramani railway station. In retaliation, the police shot him, and he later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Criminal Background:
Jaffar was previously jailed under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) but was released on bail. His gang was infamous for targeting major cities and escaping by air travel.

The Chennai police, with assistance from multiple agencies, have successfully dismantled a major chain-snatching operation, bringing relief to victims across several states.
