Kalina Home Faces Demolition Due to BMC’s Poor Planning

Mumbai, Kalina: A 50-year-old family home on Manipada Road, Kalina, is at risk of demolition as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advances its road widening and stormwater drain project. Despite the structure being in the middle of the proposed expansion, the BMC issued a notice to the Fernandes family only in late February, seeking proof of ownership for rehabilitation eligibility.

Civic activist Anil Galgali criticized the delay, calling it poor planning that causes unnecessary distress. The road, currently 9 to 15 feet wide, is being doubled, with roadside drainage already completed up to the structure. However, the house remains a major obstacle.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of H/East Ward, Swapnaja Kshirsagar, stated that if the family provides valid ownership documents, they will receive alternative accommodation. If not, demolition will proceed. She also promised an inquiry into why the structure was overlooked in the planning stage.

Meanwhile, civic chief Bhushan Gagrani has ordered the completion of all ongoing road projects by May 31, addressing delays caused by underground utility lines.
