COVID-19 Update: India Nears 7,500 Active Cases Mark, Death Toll Reaches 991

New Delhi, June 14, 2025: India’s COVID-19 situation continues to draw concern as the active case count nears the 7,500 mark, with 269 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The total number of recoveries stands at 11,967, while the death toll has reached 991, including 87 deaths recorded in recent days.

  • Kerala leads the country with 2,109 active cases, reporting 3 COVID-related deaths in the past 24 hours.

  • Gujarat follows with 1,437 active cases, while Maharashtra has reported 613 cases and 4 new fatalities.

  • Delhi currently has 672 active cases, with 8 deaths recorded since yesterday.

  • Tamil Nadu reported 232 active cases and 1 new death.

  • Andhra Pradesh has 102 active cases, and Rajasthan reported 1 death linked to bilateral pneumonia.

  • Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram currently report zero active cases, indicating effective containment in these regions.

Health authorities have detailed the comorbidities behind many of the recent deaths:

  • Kerala:

    • An 83-year-old male with coronary artery disease and heart failure

    • A 67-year-old male with renal shutdown post-transplant

    • A 61-year-old male with diabetes and hypertension

  • Maharashtra:

    • A 79-year-old diabetic with hypertension

    • An 85-year-old with uremic encephalopathy and heart failure

    • A 55-year-old with COVID-19-induced pneumonia

    • A 34-year-old with severe LV dysfunction and COVID-19

  • Rajasthan:

    • A 70-year-old woman with bilateral pneumonia

  • Tamil Nadu:

    • A 73-year-old male with multiple pre-existing conditions

Amid a rise in cases, health authorities emphasize targeted vaccination for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and immunocompromised, rather than a universal booster campaign. The current strategy leverages hybrid immunity—from both previous infections and vaccination—to manage the spread effectively.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urged the public to remain cautious and adopt essential COVID protocols such as:

  • Wearing masks in crowded or enclosed spaces

  • Practicing frequent hand hygiene

  • Avoiding large gatherings

  • Monitoring symptoms and seeking timely medical help

Authorities also advise distinguishing COVID-19 from seasonal flu-like illnesses, especially among high-risk groups.

The surge in Kerala and other regions has been partially attributed to emerging Omicron subvariants and waning immunity in the population. As cases climb past 7,000 this June, experts call for vigilance without panic, citing the need for balanced public health measures and community cooperation.
