Crossfire of Captivity: Gaza Hostages, Exchange Deal, and the Human Cost

Gaza City/Jerusalem: The ongoing conflict in Gaza, sparked by the October 7, 2023, Hamas cross-border assault into Israel, continues to unfold amid harrowing accounts of hostage exchanges and staggering human tolls. The attack resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the abduction of approximately 250 men, women, and children. While around 100 hostages were released during a temporary ceasefire in November, Israeli forces have rescued eight captives, and the remains of three dozen have been recovered in Gaza.
In a recent ceasefire deal, 33 Israeli hostages are set to be freed in phases. The agreement, which also involves Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, began with the liberation of three Israeli captives alongside 90 Palestinian detainees on Sunday.
The prolonged 15-month conflict has had a devastating human impact. Gaza health officials report over 47,000 Palestinian fatalities and widespread destruction across the territory.
