Debris at Ghatkopar Station Poses Risk to Commuters Amid Revamp

Ghatkopar Railway Station, Mumbai: Commuters at Ghatkopar railway station are facing serious inconvenience due to debris and barricades from ongoing redevelopment work. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is upgrading the station with multiple bridges and interconnected elevated decks, but extreme barricades and leftover debris on Platform No. 1 are raising safety concerns.
The demolished stone ramp of the foot overbridge at the south end has occupied crucial space, leading to overcrowding. Given that Ghatkopar is one of Mumbai’s busiest railway stations, also serving Metro Line 1 passengers, commuters have urged railway authorities to expedite debris clearance and remove barricades as soon as work is completed.

The MRVC has assured that elevated deck foundation work at Platform No. 1 will be completed in the next two days, after which barricades will be removed. Subsequent pile foundation work for a 12-meter-wide foot overbridge will take two months.
MRVC Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized the necessity of these upgrades, stating, "Despite challenges, we are committed to completing the station improvements as quickly as possible while ensuring public safety."
With passenger numbers doubling due to Metro expansions, activists have called for the introduction of local train services starting from Ghatkopar, similar to Andheri, to help manage the growing crowd.
