CISF Thwarts ₹4.93 Crore Synthetic Diamond Smuggling Attempt at Mumbai Airport

Mumbai: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) foiled an attempt to smuggle synthetic diamonds worth ₹4.93 crore at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport. The diamonds, concealed in a laptop battery compartment, were discovered during security screening.

The incident occurred in the early hours of February 12 when Bharatbhai Govindbhai Nathani, an Indian passenger, was set to board NOK Airlines Flight DD 939 to Bangkok. During routine screening at Terminal 2, CISF personnel detected an anomaly in his baggage. A detailed inspection led to the discovery of 26 small transparent packets hidden within the laptop’s battery compartment, containing synthetic diamonds weighing approximately 2,147.20 carats.

Following the seizure, CISF immediately alerted the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and Customs officials, who took custody of the passenger and the contraband for further investigation. Authorities are now probing the source and intended destination of the smuggled diamonds.

The swift action by CISF once again highlights their vigilance and commitment to preventing illegal activities at India’s international airports.
