MP Varsha Gaikwad Slams Authorities Over Persistent Leak at BKC Metro Station Amid Heavy Rainfall
Criticism Mounts on MMRC for Inadequate Waterproofing Measures; Calls for Action Against Contractors and Officials
Mumbai, June 18 : Member of Parliament Varsha Gaikwad has raised serious concerns over the persistent leakage issues at the newly inaugurated BKC Metro Station, located on the Aqua Line of the Mumbai Metro. Gaikwad posted pictures and videos of water ingress from the ceiling of the station on Tuesday, demanding accountability from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and the state government for failing to address the issue despite previous efforts to fix similar problems.
Gaikwad’s post on X (formerly Twitter) showcased the ceiling leak at the BKC Metro Station, which had been cordoned off in certain areas due to the water seepage. In her post, she expressed frustration over the repeated waterlogging incidents, stating, "The Aqua Line of Mumbai Metro lives up to its name even when it is not raining! This is the BKC Metro station today. The roof is leaking constantly, so much so, that a small area has been cordoned off."
The BKC Metro Station, part of the newly operational Colaba–Bandra–Seepz–Aarey Metro 3 line, has been a focal point of criticism after earlier leaks at Acharya Atre Chowk Metro Station also sparked outrage. Despite MMRC's promises to fix the water ingress issues, Gaikwad emphasized that the situation remains unresolved.
She further lashed out at the state government and contractors, saying, "We also saw the utter devastation of the Acharya Atre Chowk and waterlogging at several stations too. We also saw station exits being covered with tarpaulin sheets. But the question remains, has any action been taken against the officials and contractors responsible for this shoddy work? This Triple Engine Corrupt sarkar is playing with people's lives and looting Maharashtra with impunity. Shame!"
In addition to the metro leak, the recent heavy downpour has caused waterlogging issues at other critical infrastructure in the city, including the Matunga Z bridge. The bridge reportedly did not have a proper drainage system, resulting in water accumulation and raising concerns about the bridge's maintenance and safety. Railway officials have acknowledged the issue and reassured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the waterlogging problem and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The ongoing water seepage issues at BKC Metro Station have drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning the quality of work and the accountability of both contractors and officials involved in the construction. MP Gaikwad has called for an investigation into the matter, urging the government to take strict action against those responsible for poor construction standards and failure to address public safety concerns.
