Mumbai to Launch 11 Electric 'Flying Ferries' for Eco-Friendly, High-Speed Commutes
World’s Largest Electric Foiling Ferry Fleet to Transform City’s Waterways

Mumbai, June 18 : Mumbai is set to revolutionize its public transport system with the introduction of 11 hydrofoiling electric ferries, offering a faster, cleaner, and more efficient commuting alternative via its waterways. The Candela P-12 electric ferries, designed in Sweden and commissioned by local operator JalVimana, will soon ply the city’s key maritime routes, drastically cutting travel time and emissions.
The announcement was made during Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Stockholm, where Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog and JalVimana CEO Niraj Thakur confirmed the deal. These state-of-the-art ferries will mark the world’s largest fleet of electric foiling vessels, establishing Mumbai as a global leader in sustainable urban maritime transport.
The Candela P-12 employs computer-controlled underwater wings that lift the boat above the water, reducing drag and enabling high speeds with minimal energy use. These “flying ferries” are silent, wake-free, and operate at a fraction of the cost of traditional diesel-powered boats. They are designed to offer a quiet, smooth, and safe ride, enhancing the commuting experience for thousands of daily travelers.
“This project showcases the full potential of Mumbai’s waterways and represents a transformative step towards modern, eco-friendly transport,” said Hasselskog. JalVimana’s Niraj Thakur emphasized that the ferries would not only boost efficiency but also support Maharashtra’s broader vision of clean mobility solutions.
Routes being planned include Gateway of India to Alibaug, slashing commute time from nearly three hours to under 30 minutes, and services to Elephanta Island and the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. These new routes will integrate with existing public transportation networks to offer seamless travel across the region.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane are leading the initiative to introduce thousands of electric boats across the state, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable infrastructure and greener cities.
With this landmark acquisition, Mumbai is poised to set a global example for urban waterway mobility, harnessing cutting-edge technology to solve the challenges of traffic congestion and pollution.
