Eco-Friendly Maghi Ganesh Utsav: BMC Cracks Down on POP Idols

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has mandated the use of eco-friendly Ganesh idols for the upcoming Maghi Ganesh Utsav, which begins on February 1. Sarvajanik mandals must submit affidavits confirming they will avoid Plaster of Paris (POP) idols, and households are also required to comply with these eco-friendly norms.

This move comes in line with the May 2020 Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines and a 2024 Bombay High Court ruling banning POP idols due to their environmental impact on water bodies. The civic body has urged citizens to conduct idol immersion at home or utilize artificial ponds arranged by the BMC in residential colonies.

The BMC has warned violators of legal consequences under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 and other pollution laws. Officials will actively monitor compliance during the festival. While sculptor Reshma Khatu believes the decision should come from mandals themselves, she calls for authorities to provide better alternatives rather than enforcing a strict ban.

Environmental activists and artists alike emphasize the importance of ensuring the policy is enforced effectively to protect water bodies and promote sustainable celebrations.
