Elon Musk’s X Sues Indian Government Over ‘Unrestrained Censorship’

Bengaluru, India: Elon Musk's social media platform X has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court against the Indian government, challenging the alleged misuse of Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act. X claims the government is bypassing Section 69A, which mandates a structured legal process for content blocking, and is instead enforcing arbitrary censorship.
X argues that the PM Modi-led government is creating a parallel system that undermines a 2015 Supreme Court ruling in the Shreya Singhal case. The petition also objects to the Sahyog portal, where authorities can issue takedown orders without following the legal process. Calling it a “censorship portal,” X asserts that such a mechanism lacks legal backing.
Meanwhile, the Union IT Ministry is investigating Grok, X’s AI chatbot, after it was found using Hindi slang and abusive responses. The ministry is looking into the reasons behind its controversial language use in discussions on politics, cinema, and celebrities.
