Ericsson & Jio Successfully Manage Record-Breaking Network Surge at Maha Kumbh 2025

Varanasi/Ayodhya, India: The Maha Kumbh 2025, held from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj, witnessed an unprecedented surge in network traffic, especially in Varanasi and Ayodhya. Ericsson and Jio Infocomm Ltd (Jio) successfully handled the massive demand, ensuring seamless connectivity despite record-breaking participation of over 660 million people.

On peak days, Jio’s True 5G Standalone (SA) network managed 20 million voice and 400 million data service requests, enabling visitors to share images, videos, and stay connected. To support the surge, Jio and Ericsson deployed advanced solutions like network slicing, carrier aggregation on the 700 MHz band, and Voice over NR (VoNR) for superior voice quality.

Five on-field war rooms, real-time traffic monitoring, and data analytics ensured uninterrupted service, with 55% of total event data traffic handled by Ericsson’s 5G solutions. Priority access was also provided to government agencies managing the event.

Vijay Sharma, Head of Customer Unit Reliance Jio at Ericsson, highlighted their commitment to network reliability under extreme conditions, emphasizing the role of software solutions and proactive monitoring in preventing congestion.

This successful deployment of cutting-edge 5G technology showcased the future of mobile communication in high-density events, ensuring a smooth and reliable experience for Jio users.
