Fake Surgeon in Mumbai: How a Fraudulent Doctor Stole Money and Health

Mumbai:The Mumbai Police are actively searching for a fake doctor, identified as Zaffar Merchant (and possibly operating under various aliases), who allegedly duped numerous senior citizens by promising miraculous cures through fake ‘ayurvedic treatments’ and performing unsafe, unlicensed surgeries. The conman, who has been operating in various parts of the city, is now a prime suspect in a string of fraudulent medical practices that have caused both financial loss and serious harm to elderly victims. 

The investigation took a new turn when an Andheri woman recently came forward with photographic evidence of the fake doctor, following a disturbing incident that occurred in 2021, when her elderly mother was targeted by the scammer. After receiving dubious treatments that left her with worsening health, the woman turned to the Oshiwara  police with damning photographs of the suspect, which have now been circulated to aid in his capture.

While the police have confirmed that the scheme spanned several months, with several complaints from across the city, it's feared that the total number of victims may be far higher. The fraudsters reportedly targeted elderly residents in localities like Andheri, Oshiwara , and other parts of the western suburbs. They would often advertise through word-of-mouth referrals or fake clinic signage, making it difficult for unsuspecting citizens to differentiate between the legitimate medical professionals and fraudsters.

As the investigation continues, the authorities are working to track down Zaffar Merchant and his gang. They are also looking into whether similar fraudulent operations may be occurring in other parts of Mumbai or beyond, and if there are more victims who have not yet come forward.For now, the focus remains on bringing the conman to justice and ensuring that all victims are compensated for the harm they’ve suffered.
