Good News for Mumbaikars! ₹16,241 Crore Upgrade Announced for Mumbai Suburban Railway Network

Mumbai, July 25, 2025: In a major boost to Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure, the Indian Railways has unveiled a massive upgrade plan worth ₹16,241 crore for the Mumbai Suburban Railway Network. The ambitious move is set to significantly enhance daily commuting, ease congestion, and improve service frequency for the city’s over 75 lakh daily rail passengers.

The announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who emphasized that the new infrastructure projects aim to modernize the existing system and address the growing demands of Mumbai’s rapidly expanding population.“These projects will provide long-term relief to Mumbai’s suburban rail users by reducing crowding, increasing train frequency, and improving travel comfort,” the Minister said.

12 Major Projects Approved

A total of 12 railway infrastructure projects have been sanctioned, each focusing on critical routes and bottlenecks across the suburban network. The details of the projects are as follows:

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Indian Railways will also introduce 238 new air-conditioned local trains in the Mumbai division. These trains will be equipped with automatic doors, enhancing commuter safety and minimising accidents due to overcrowding and open-door travel.

Enhanced Commuter Experience

Once completed, the upgraded lines and additional AC trains are expected to:

  • Reduce overcrowding during peak hours

  • Allow higher frequency of services

  • Cut down travel time

  • Improve comfort, safety, and punctuality

The projects are in various stages of planning and execution, with completion timelines ranging from short-term upgrades to multi-year developments.

A Major Step in Mumbai’s Transit Modernisation

The ₹16,241 crore railway revamp is part of a broader vision to transform Mumbai’s public transport, in line with other mega projects such as the Mumbai Metro expansion and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.

With the railway network serving as the city’s lifeline, these developments are set to bring lasting relief to lakhs of daily commuters and improve overall urban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
