Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Achieves Major Construction Milestones

Mumbai : The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, India’s first high-speed rail corridor, has made significant construction progress, marking key milestones across its 508-kilometer stretch. Of the total route, 352 km lies in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, while the remaining 156 km falls within Maharashtra.

As of April 18, 2025, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) reported that 293 kilometers of viaduct construction has been completed. In addition, 375 km of pier work and 394 km of pier foundations have been executed. Girder casting has reached 320 km, setting the pace for track installation.
Out of the 12 planned stations—spanning major locations such as Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Ahmedabad—structural work on six of the eight stations in Gujarat has been completed. Meanwhile, the installation of noise barriers in Gujarat is in full swing, with over 3 lakh units installed across a 150-km stretch.

Fourteen major river bridges have been successfully constructed in districts including Valsad, Navsari, Kheda, and Vadodara. Additionally, engineers have completed seven steel bridges and five pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridges to support the infrastructure.

Track bed construction in Gujarat has reached 143 km, while welding of rails into long 200-meter panels on the viaduct is currently underway. The installation of Overhead Equipment (OHE) masts is progressing rapidly, with over 100 masts set up between Surat and Bilimora.

In Maharashtra, tunneling work is moving ahead efficiently. The 21-km tunnel between Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata is under active development, with 3.3 km of tunnel heading completed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Notably, the shafts at Vikhroli and Sawli have reached depths of 56 meters and 39 meters respectively. In Palghar, seven mountain tunnels are also being excavated using NATM.

Construction at the Mumbai Bullet Train station is progressing steadily. Approximately 75% of the massive 18.7 lakh cubic meter excavation has been completed. Base slab casting is ongoing, with 25,000 cubic meters of concrete already poured, out of a total requirement of 2 lakh cubic meters. Each casting involves temperature-controlled concrete—around 3,000 to 4,000 cubic meters—prepared on-site using in-situ batching and chiller plants. Furthermore, all 3,384 secant piles have been successfully installed at the Mumbai station site.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train is a flagship infrastructure project set to transform high-speed travel in India. Once completed, the train is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from over six hours to just about two hours, revolutionizing connectivity and setting new benchmarks in rail travel.
