Mumbai Local Train Tragedy Sparks Action: CM Fadnavis Promises AC Locals, Capacity Boost During Peak Hours

Mumbai, June 10: In the wake of a tragic incident near Mumbra railway station on Monday morning that claimed four lives due to severe overcrowding, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured a major overhaul of Mumbai’s suburban rail infrastructure. Addressing the media on Tuesday, the Chief Minister outlined a multi-pronged plan aimed at easing commuter congestion and enhancing safety.

Speaking about the urgency of addressing the daily struggles of Mumbai’s local train passengers, CM Fadnavis said, “Efforts are underway to bring more AC trains to suburban Mumbai. We are committed to improving both comfort and safety for commuters.” He highlighted that the existing peak-hour carrying capacity is insufficient and must be urgently strengthened.

The tragedy, which underscored the dangers of overcrowding, has spurred swift governmental and ministerial responses. CM Fadnavis revealed that the Railway Ministry has raised concerns over non-AC local trains lacking doors, which increases the risk of accidents. To mitigate this, new non-AC trains will be designed with enhanced safety and ventilation features.

According to the Chief Minister, these trains will include:

  • Louvers on doors to improve air circulation.

  • Roof-mounted ventilation units to pump in fresh air.

  • Vestibules between coaches to allow passengers to move freely and distribute the crowd more evenly.

The first prototype of the redesigned non-AC train is expected to be ready by November 2025, with full deployment after certification by January 2026.

Highlighting the central government's investment, CM Fadnavis stated, “In the past 11 years, PM Modi’s government has significantly improved Mumbai’s suburban infrastructure—ranging from escalators and drinking water facilities to footbridges and road expansion. However, more needs to be done, especially during peak hours.”

The announcement has brought a mix of hope and cautious optimism to Mumbai’s millions of daily commuters, who await timely execution of the proposed plans. As Mumbai continues to expand, the pressure on its lifeline—local trains—demands swift, sustainable, and commuter-focused solutions.
