Good News for Mumbaikars! 7.5 KM Coastal Road Promenade from Breach Candy to Worli Set to Open on June 15

Mumbai, May 23: Mumbai is on the brink of unveiling a major urban development that promises to redefine the city’s coastline. The much-anticipated 7.5-kilometre-long sea-facing promenade, part of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, is likely to open to the public by June 15, according to civic officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Stretching from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), the 20-metre-wide walkway is being hailed as a scenic haven for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. This pedestrian paradise is not only a recreational space but a significant step toward reclaiming public access to the city’s shoreline.

The promenade will include 20 underpasses, placed every 400 metres, to ensure seamless access between the coastal stretch and the mainland, eliminating the need for pedestrians to navigate traffic-heavy roads.

The 17-hectare promenade area is part of a broader plan to unlock 70 hectares of open public space along the city’s west coast. Out of this, the BMC has developed 12 hectares as a public walkway, while Tata Sons is beautifying the remaining 5-hectare central median.

Approximately 70% of the promenade will be adorned with green landscapes, while the rest will consist of paved walking and cycling paths, seating zones, and public amenities.

As part of a larger vision to promote environmental sustainability and public wellbeing, several innovative and inclusive features are planned:

  • Miyawaki forest zones

  • Butterfly gardens

  • Yoga tracks and open-air gyms

  • Children’s play areas

  • Senior citizen parks

  • Open-air theatres and musical fountains

In a landmark move, the BMC has opted for a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-based maintenance model to ensure the promenade's long-term upkeep. After inviting Expressions of Interest from five companies—Reliance Industries, Jindal, Vedanta, Raymond, and TorresReliance Industries was selected for meeting all criteria without seeking any commercial returns.

Pending administrative approvals, Reliance will submit a comprehensive development plan, which includes detailed landscaping, park creation, plaza development, and maintenance proposals. A senior BMC official stated that further progress will depend on the company’s final blueprint.

The promenade is part of the 10.58-kilometre Mumbai Coastal Road, connecting Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to Worli via the BWSL, both carriageways of which are now fully operational.

With its focus on sustainability, accessibility, and public recreation, the promenade stands to become a landmark addition to Mumbai’s ever-evolving urban landscape.
