Blast in Nalasopara Flat Injures Four Family Members, Investigation Underway

Nalasopara, January 10, 2025: A blast caused by gas leaking from deodorant cans and perfume bottles stored in a flat in Nalasopara left all four members of a family with burn injuries late on Thursday night. The explosion, which occurred while food was being cooked, took place in the first-floor apartment of the Roshni building in Nalasopara (East).

The family members, identified as Mahadev Wadar (41), his wife Sunita, and their two children, Harshada (14) and Harshvardhan (9), were immediately rushed to a local hospital with burn injuries. On Friday afternoon, three of the four injured members were shifted to a hospital in Mumbai for further treatment.

According to a police source, the blast occurred when deodorant cans, which were being filled with spray, ignited due to the flame from the cooking food. The explosion was so intense that it shattered the window glasses and caused flames to spread to the adjacent flat. Neighbors quickly responded by pouring water to prevent the fire from spreading further, said Ayesha Shaikh, a nearby resident.

A doctor at the Mumbai hospital informed that Mahadev suffered 43% burns, his wife Sunita 80%, and their daughter Harshada 64%. The son, Harshvardhan, sustained minor burn injuries and remained in the Nalasopara hospital. The doctor stated that all the patients were stable after receiving primary treatment.

The police are yet to register an official complaint as the family is still in the hospital. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the blast, including whether the family was involved in preparing deodorants or was running a scrap business that involved storing deodorant cans in the flat.

This incident highlights the dangers of storing large quantities of flammable products in confined spaces. Authorities are urging residents to be cautious about handling and storing aerosol cans and other hazardous materials, especially in homes with open flames or cooking activities.
