Tragedy in Bandra East: Mentally Ill Mother Allegedly Strangles 10-Year-Old Son

Bandra East, Mumbai : A horrifying incident shook the Y Government Colony on Thursday evening, as a 36-year-old mother, Abhilasha Awate, allegedly strangled her 10-year-old son, Sarvesh, to death during a mental health crisis.

The incident occurred in the Awate family's two-bedroom flat while Sarvesh’s father, Ravindra Awate, 44, an Assistant Secretary in the Excise Department, was at work. The couple also has a 14-year-old daughter.

Police reports reveal that Abhilasha, a schizophrenia patient undergoing treatment for over a year, became enraged and attacked her son around 7:30 PM. Despite her daughter's frantic call to their father, warning that her mother might harm Sarvesh, Abhilasha locked herself in a room with the boy. She reportedly used a mobile charging wire to strangle him.

Upon receiving the father's request to check on the family, a neighbor alerted the police. Authorities broke into the flat to discover Sarvesh lifeless and Abhilasha in a disoriented state. "The accused mother appears unaware of her actions and her son's death," police stated.

An FIR has been registered under Section 103(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on a complaint from Sarvesh’s father.
