Gorai Dump to Thrills: BMC's Vision of a Theme Park on Reclaimed Land

Gorai, Mumbai: In an ambitious move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering transforming Mumbai’s Gorai dumping ground into a bustling theme park. The Gorai site, spread over 19 hectares, was scientifically closed 18 years ago, with part of it currently functioning as a waste transfer station. Over the years, BMC has developed green spaces atop the former landfill.

While an earlier plan for a waste-to-energy plant was paused, Union Minister and North Mumbai MP, Piyush Goyal, recently proposed turning the site into a tourism hotspot. As a result, the BMC is now exploring the feasibility of creating a theme-based park, capitalizing on the reclaimed land’s potential.

BMC officials emphasize the sustainability aspect of the project, mentioning that a towering 26-meter hill of waste remains, which has already been capped and greened. The area’s transformation into a theme park promises to revitalize the space and offer a sustainable solution for tourism development.

In another related project, the civic body has extended the deadline for processing waste at Mulund dumping ground to June 2025. Initially set for October 2024, this project aims to clear the Mulund landfill and convert it into open space for future use.
