Mumbai: Western Railway has officially commenced work on the highly anticipated 8-km Goregaon-Borivli harbour line project, marking a major milestone in the city’s rail infrastructure. The project, which includes the construction of an elevated station at Malad, is set to revolutionize connectivity and reduce congestion on Mumbai's Western Railway network. The line is projected to be operational by March 2027.

Project Phases and Timeline

The project, valued at ₹825 crore under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project III, will be executed in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (2026-27): A 2-km stretch from Goregaon to Malad.

  • Phase 2 (2027-28): A 5-km stretch from Malad to Borivli.

Key Highlights

  • Land Acquisition: 2,731 sqm of land is required, of which 2,535 sqm is privately owned, and 196 sqm is acquired by BMC.

  • Resettlement: The demolition of 16 railway buildings will affect 520 residents, with rehabilitation details already submitted to the MMRDA.

  • Bridges: One major bridge and 16 minor bridges are to be built or upgraded for the new lines.

  • Elevated Section: The stretch near Malad will be elevated, enhancing accessibility.

Progress Update

  • Land acquisition proposals have been submitted to the District Collector and BMC.

  • A joint measurement survey for land assessment is underway.

  • Baseline socio-economic and environmental surveys have been completed, with project-affected individuals identified.

  • Proposals for tree cutting and transplantation are under review.

Once complete, this project will extend the harbour line beyond Goregaon, integrating Mumbai's suburban and harbour rail services for seamless travel.
