Mumbai's Traffic Tech Revolution: Satellite-Enabled Radars to Nab Violators in 2025

Mumbai: Mumbai is set to usher in a new era of traffic management in January 2025, with the launch of high-tech radar-enabled vehicles during the annual Road Safety Week. These advanced vehicles will utilize satellite technology to identify violators across a marked area rather than targeting individual vehicles.
The Maharashtra transport department has procured 69 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art radars capable of tracking offences like speeding, not wearing helmets, and neglecting seat belts. Unlike conventional systems, the radars in these vehicles can detect traffic violations from a distance of up to 1.5 km, powered by embedded data from the ‘Vahan’ software.
“This is the first initiative of its kind in India,” said a senior Motor Vehicles Department official. "These radars will enable us to track multiple offenders simultaneously, significantly enhancing road safety enforcement."
Currently, 187 interceptor vehicles are deployed in Mumbai with speed guns and cameras capable of reading number plates from 500 meters away. To expand coverage, the department plans to acquire 27 more vehicles for every RTO office.
Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar confirmed the landmark project, signaling the state’s commitment to curbing road mishaps and ensuring public safety in the New Year.
