Haryana Tragedy: Retired Army Jawan, Two Sons Die After Falling Into Clogged Sewer in Rohtak Village

Rohtak, May 13:In a heart-wrenching incident that has triggered outrage and mourning across Rohtak district, a retired Army jawan and his two sons lost their lives after falling into a clogged sewer outside their home in Majra village on Wednesday morning. The family has alleged civic negligence, blaming local authorities for the unmaintained and hazardous condition of the drainage system.

The deceased have been identified as Mahabir Singh, a retired Army personnel, and his sons Laxman and Deepak, both employed in private sector jobs. The tragic sequence began when Laxman attempted to open the lid of the blocked manhole, lost his balance, and fell in. Mahabir and Deepak jumped in one after the other to rescue him, but none survived.

According to family members, all three victims likely died due to inhalation of toxic gases inside the sewer. Their bodies were later retrieved by rescue personnel and declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
“The drain outside our house was blocked. Laxman went to open it and fell in. Mahabir went after him but didn’t return. Deepak followed, and we lost all three within minutes,” said Santosh Devi, the grieving mother and wife of the deceased.

The Rohtak Fire Department received the distress call at 7:30 AM, according to Fireman Rohtas. Initial rescue efforts were hampered due to poor air quality inside the manhole. Two rescuers faced breathing issues, and only a third team member equipped with an oxygen cylinder could retrieve the bodies.

Allegations of Civic Negligence

Villagers and family members have pointed fingers at the local municipal authorities and sewer contractors, accusing them of neglecting repeated complaints about the clogged sewer.
