Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai; IMD Issues Nowcast Warning for City and Suburbs

Mumbai, July 15: Mumbai woke up to torrential rains on Tuesday morning, disrupting daily life across the city and catching commuters by surprise. Following the intensified downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Nowcast warning for Mumbai and Thane, cautioning residents about moderate to heavy spells of rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds in isolated areas.
The warning, issued at 10:30 AM, remains valid for the next four hours. Citizens have been advised to take necessary precautions while stepping out and avoid venturing into low-lying or coastal areas.
On Monday, the IMD had placed the entire Konkan region — including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri — under a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall. However, no alert had been issued for Tuesday, making the sudden downpour unexpected for many office-goers and commuters.
Rainfall data released by the weather department showed significant rainfall across the city over the past 12 hours. Some of the highest recorded rainfall included:
-
Chembur: 67 mm
-
BKC: 68 mm
-
Santacruz: 60 mm
-
Pali Hill: 68 mm
-
Vile Parle: 35 mm
Cumulative rainfall on Monday also varied across regions, with Mumbai city receiving 19 mm, eastern suburbs 35 mm, and western suburbs 33 mm.
In light of the weather conditions, Mumbai Police issued an advisory urging residents to remain indoors unless necessary. “Citizens are requested to avoid visiting coastal and low-lying areas. Our officials and staff are alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of emergencies, dial 100 / 112 / 103,” the advisory stated.
Authorities remain on high alert as the rains continue, and citizens are advised to monitor official updates from IMD and disaster management teams.
