Himachal Tragedy: One Dead, Over 20 Injured as Bus Falls Into 200-Feet Gorge in Mandi

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), June 18, 2025 : A tragic road accident claimed one life and left over 20 passengers injured when a private bus plunged into a 200-feet deep gorge in the Kalkhar area of Mandi district on Tuesday morning. The mishap occurred around 9:00 a.m. as the bus was en route from Baldwara to Mandi.

According to preliminary reports, the bus lost control on a slippery, rain-soaked road and tumbled down the steep hillside. One person died on the spot, reportedly after being crushed under the overturned vehicle. Local residents acted swiftly, informing authorities and assisting with initial rescue efforts.

Police and emergency rescue teams, along with local volunteers, quickly reached the scene. Despite persistent rainfall hampering rescue operations, the injured were pulled out from the mangled bus with the help of ropes and stretchers. A crane was later deployed to lift the wreckage and extricate the trapped driver.

The seriously injured were rushed to Nerchowk Medical College, while others were treated at the Community Health Centre in Rewalsar.

Officials investigating the crash suspect that the bus was overloaded, and the driver may have lost control due to the poor condition of the road combined with mechanical issues. Preliminary findings also point to possible negligence and poor vehicle maintenance as contributing factors.

Witnesses report that the bus overturned multiple times before coming to a halt, with many passengers pinned underneath. Local terrain and weather significantly delayed rescue efforts, complicating access to the accident site.

The district administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause and assess liability. Authorities have also called for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly for vehicles operating on hilly routes.

The identity of the deceased passenger is yet to be formally released. Police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.

The tragedy has reignited concerns about road safety, vehicle fitness, and overloading on the hilly routes of Himachal Pradesh, especially during monsoon season when roads become treacherous.
