India Now Powers 50% of Global Online Payments: Amitabh Kant at Rising Bharat Summit

New Delhi: India has emerged as the global leader in digital transactions, now accounting for 50% of all online payments worldwide, revealed Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, at the Rising Bharat Summit 2025, hosted by News18.
“India leads the world in fast payments,” said Kant. “We handle 50% of global digital transactions. China follows with 20%.”
Kant also spotlighted the nation’s incredible transformation over the last decade.
“A few years ago, we were part of the fragile five. Today, we’re among the top five global economies,” he noted.
Highlighting India’s infrastructure and tech leap, he added, “India has made remarkable progress in both physical and digital infrastructure.”
On the start-up boom, Kant pointed out a dramatic surge:
“We had just 156 start-ups earlier. Today, there are over 1.61 lakh, with more than 100 unicorns.” He praised Indian innovations in AI and healthcare, calling them “path-breaking.”
