Parliament Adjourned Sine Die After Protests, 'One Nation, One Election' Bills Referred to Joint Committee

New Delhi: The Winter session of Parliament was adjourned sine die amidst uproar from the Opposition following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's controversial remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. As protests from Congress and other Opposition parties escalated, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were brought to an abrupt close.

Before the adjournment, the Lok Sabha referred two crucial bills on the One Nation, One Election initiative to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further examination. These bills, requiring constitutional amendments, aim to introduce simultaneous elections across the nation—a proposition that has stirred considerable debate.

The committee will consist of 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha, including key figures like Ghanshyam Tiwari and Randeep Singh Surjewala. The committee’s findings will be submitted by the first day of the last week of the next session.

Despite attempts by Speaker Om Birla to restore order, the session ended with protests against Shah’s comments continuing. Birla also issued a stern warning to MPs, threatening severe actions for any future demonstrations within Parliament premises.

The debate on simultaneous elections is set to continue, with significant discussions expected as the JPC reviews the proposals.
