India Sees Decline in COVID-19 Cases; One Death Reported in Maharashtra

Mumbai, June 17, 2025: India has witnessed a notable decline in COVID-19 cases with active infections dropping by 428 across all states, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The total number of active cases in the country now stands at 836, with 14,772 individuals having recovered and 109 reported deaths since January 2025.
In a concerning development, Maharashtra recorded one more COVID-related death, taking the state's total to 29. The deceased was a 44-year-old woman who had chronic liver cirrhosis. Health officials confirmed that all recent fatalities in the state have occurred among individuals with serious pre-existing conditions.
Maharashtra Case Update:
On Monday, the state reported 34 new cases, including 12 from Mumbai. This reflects a declining trend as daily cases in the city had consistently been between 20 and 30 earlier this month.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: 7 cases

Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Satara, Sangli, Amravati, Nagpur: 1 case each
All patients were reported to have mild symptoms. Earlier, on June 13, a 35-year-old cardiac patient also succumbed to COVID-19 in a private hospital in Mumbai.

Smaller states and union territories like Manipur, Tripura, and Chandigarh reported minimal or no active cases.
Despite the fall in numbers, health authorities continue to urge caution, especially for people with comorbidities and the elderly. The MoHFW reiterated its recommendation to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including mask usage in crowded places, regular hand hygiene, and prompt testing in case of symptoms.
